Sketch n’ Wash Landscapes

If you’ve never tried drawing with a Sketch n’ Wash pencil, then here’s your opportunity to try a really fun technique! Using a black graphite pencil, learn to create expressive landscape images using this fluid and forgiving water soluble pencil. We’ll start with some simple exercises to warm up before translating your new found skill into a lovely black and white landscape scene.

Jen

Jen is an artist, illustrator, designer, yogi and mom of two. After graduating with a BFA in Illustration in 1991 from Kendall School of Art & Design in Grand Rapids, MI, she relocated to Atlanta, GA where she began work as an art director and freelance illustrator.

After almost two decades of working in the design world, Jen began experimenting with mixed media and created a series of paintings featuring playful and ethereal subjects in nature. She had her first solo show in 2001, and has taken on many private commissions since then.

Some of of her favorite mark making tools include hand carved stamps, water-soluble graphite pencils and white gel pens. Jen shares her creative techniques teaching mixed media classes at GDS ranging from watercolor mixed media and collage to image transfers and acrylic painting.

Art Supply Drive for Avondale Elementary

Garage Door Studio is hosting an art supply drive benefiting Avondale Elementary! Budget cuts in DeKalb County once again affect the arts. We believe every child deserves access to art making and quality supplies at school. Art teachers are known to go out and purchase supplies out of their own pockets. Let’s help out Avondale Elementary and get kids the art supplies they need to create great art!
 
We will be collecting art supplies August 26-28. Simply drop off items at Garage Door Studio during our open hours. (Friday: 11-6, Saturday, 10-5 and Sunday 12-5) We will also accept unused items you may have at home. Free Art Friday: August 26th

On Friday, August 26th, we’re hosting a FREE ART FRIDAY art-making session in the art center 12-5 pm. All ages may stop in to create a small work of art that can be placed anywhere in downtown or residential Avondale Estates for someone to find free art! Spread the love of creating.

Loom Weaving 101

Instructor: Candice O’Mary
Learn the basics of loom weaving and create your very own modern tapestry!  In this hands-on class you’ll learn the basics of weaving and warping a loom, color combination and texture creation through the use of yarns, cording and fabrics. You’ll leave with an understanding of how to create a beautiful hand-woven textile. All supplies will be provided and the loom you use will be yours to keep but feel free to bring your own yarn if you have specific colors you’d like to use.

Succulent Terrarium Design

Ever wanted to learn the steps to create a terrarium? Terrariums are all the rage and you’ll love learning how to create these tiny landscapes that create their own ecosystems under glass. Get instruction on how to make and design a healthy living aquarium using live succulent plants. We’ll also have whimsies available to include in your little habitat!  Instructions on how to care for your terrarium will be included to take home. This is a BYOB event, bring a friend and enjoy a creative night out!

Friday Night Sip n’ Knit

TGIF for a night of knitting! Wind down from your week and join us in the studio for a beginners knitting class. Learn the basic stitches to start any simple project. Get an introduction to the basic knitting terms a new knitter would need. We will cover internet resources and how to read labels when buying yarn. Bring your beverage of choice!

Size 7 pair of knitting needles
One skein, category 4 yarn, also known as worsted weight.

Jewelry Metal Stamping

Instructor: Molly Yates of Backyard Swag

In this class, you’ll learn the basics of jewelry metal stamping, including learning about metal gauges, texturizing your jewelry blanks to create a hammered effect, and more. By the end of the class, you’ll walk away with three beautiful new pieces to call your own!

We’ll provide all tools and metal you need. Be sure to bring your favorite sayings and messages with you to stamp the class away.

Molly Yates was raised on sweet tea and sunshine in the small town of Camden, South Carolina. She attended Clemson University where she began studying fine art, but later switched to marketing.

After graduation, Molly moved to Atlanta and landed her first job working as a contractor for Coca-Cola in 2002. On a whim eleven years and three jobs later, she decided to take a metal stamping class and instantly fell in love with the craft. When losing her job a month later, she decided to jump in head first as a jewelry artist.

Fall Break Camp

Ages 7-11
September 12-16
10 am – 3:00 pm

Campers will love this week! Using creativity and a little fall magic, kids will create tons of cool art projects! Campers will forage for fall foliage and learn to encase their nature finds in resin for keychains, create wind chimes, assemble robots made from Altoid tins and spare parts, make their own ceramic hand dishes, polymer clay creatures, dream catchers, and so much more!

We encourage exploration and curiosity when it comes to the magical world of arts and crafts. Campers will take part in our creative community while making lasting friendships.

Sibling discount: $10 Please indicate in PayPal notes if you have enrolled a sibling and we will credit $10 after transaction is completed.

If you need to cancel a camp reservation, it must be done before Sept. 1st. After Sept. 1st, no refunds or credits, but you are welcome to find a replacement.

Camp goers are provided a framework to improve their art making and communication skills while learning about how people in other parts of the world have expressed themselves and shaped their cultures. Students are encouraged to pursue projects that are personally engaging and challenging.  

Outside the classroom Lacy loves creating her own art, collecting nature finds on walks, and is a huge animal lover.
