- Found Art Assemblage
July 25, 2018
7:00 pm - 9:30 pm
Instructor: Laura Baker
Students will be introduced to the art of assemblage (creating with 3d objects) by receiving step by step instruction on constructing a work of art out of various upcycled materials such as discarded wood, bottle caps, glue and paint. Create new meanings by reinventing found objects to create a 3-dimensional piece of art.
In this class, you will construct a dog that can either be a likeness of your own or whatever rendition you can dream up! What a fun piece of art to display in the backyard on a fence, in your porch or house. Laura will discuss her process, show examples and then talk about what items you would like to use in your work to begin the project. Throughout the class, you’ll receive guidance and practical advice to complete a one of a kind, evocative work of art.
Materials Fee: $20
Please bring exact cash or make checks out to Laura Baker.
All materials are provided and all levels welcome. Items will be gathered by the instructor from thrift stores, rail yards, and recycling plants. Discover the magic that happens when you combine random objects with the elements of design and good company!
Though Laura Baker started out in the corporate design world, but her natural habitat is in the classroom. Laura’s ability to bring out hidden student talent as a Kansas City Art Institute instructor led to a position on the admissions team.
Selecting the college’s students enabled Laura to travel. Meeting the best high school art teachers in the nation made such an impression on Laura, she joined the public school system. She eventually chaired the art department at Kansas City’s Arts Magnet School where she led students to earn thousands in scholarship dollars.
Laura says they key to nurturing talent is helping students rediscover the childlike joy of art-making. She now shares this passion with her community in Atlanta, when she moved here in 2005 to work with a group of Outsider Artist. Though this has led to awards and recognition, the title she cherishes most is “Mama L.” when she adopted her daughter in 2009.
