Mixed Media Black Bear

The black bear is a powerful symbol of strength, intuition, and connection to the wild. In this mixed media workshop, we'll use the bear as our inspiration while focusing on something even more important than realism: expression.

Working from reference images, you'll learn how to capture the essence and spirit of the bear through simple lines, bold values, and intuitive mark-making. Begin by creating richly layered abstract backgrounds filled with color, texture, and energy. Then, using a few key compositional principles, you'll develop a series of expressive bear studies that emphasize mood, movement, and personality rather than perfect detail.

This workshop is designed to help you loosen up, trust your instincts, and discover new ways of seeing and creating. Through quick painting exercises, you'll learn to let go of overthinking and embrace spontaneity, allowing unexpected and exciting results to emerge. The focus is on process over perfection, exploration over refinement.

Whether you're a beginner looking to build confidence or an experienced artist seeking to develop a more personal and expressive style, this playful and encouraging class offers the freedom to experiment, take risks, and connect more deeply with your creative voice.

All Materials supplied in this workshop. If you have your own paints/brushes, feel free to bring along.

About Jen
Painting takes me to magical places, usually conjuring a story. I love to paint the wild nature around me and get lost in the process. My paintings have abstract beginnings, sometimes with a loose charcoal drawing or translucent layers of acrylic or watercolor. I embrace playfulness and joy in my practice with the intention of creating a sense of wonder for my viewers. Jen has been teaching workshops for over 10 years and is co-owner of Garage Door Studio.

Cancellation Policy
Workshop registrations are non-refundable and considered final sale.

If Garage Door Studio or the instructor must cancel a workshop for any reason, participants will receive a full refund.

If you are unable to attend and provide at least 7 days notice, we will issue a studio credit that may be applied toward another full-price workshop. Credits must be used within 30 days of the issue date or they will expire.

Cancellations made 3 days or less before the workshop date are not eligible for a refund, credit, or transfer due to the limited class size and advance preparation required.
